The Nintendo Switch 2 is the best handheld console for most people: it costs the least here, has by far the strongest owner feedback, and works as a portable, tabletop or TV console. If you already play on PC or through Game Pass, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is the better fit, as long as you are comfortable with Windows.

The other two are capable machines with problem listings. The Steam Deck OLED offered here is a third-party international unit priced well above what Valve charges. The MSI Claw A8 costs more than any other pick, with a 3.6-star rating from only 22 reviews.

Quick comparison

  • Nintendo Switch 2: $499, 4.8 stars from 5,849 reviews, 7.9in 120fps LCD, 256GB, 4K dock, sold by Amazon.com
  • ASUS ROG Xbox Ally: $579.99, 4.3 stars from 557 reviews, 7in 1080p 120Hz, Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
  • Steam Deck OLED: $1,069.05, 4.6 stars from 538 reviews, 7.4in HDR OLED at 90Hz, 1TB, international version from a third-party seller
  • MSI Claw A8: $1,237.17, 3.6 stars from 22 reviews, Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 24GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Thunderbolt 4

Nintendo Switch 2: the safe, polished choice

The Nintendo Switch 2 combines the largest screen in this group (7.9 inches, with HDR and up to 120fps) with a dock that outputs up to 4K to your TV. Storage is 256GB, expandable with microSD Express cards. Older standard microSD cards are a different format, so budget for the newer type if you plan to download a lot.

It is sold and shipped by Amazon.com, holds the Best Seller and Amazon's Choice badges, and its 4.8-star average over almost 6,000 reviews is the strongest signal in this comparison. Note that this is the Console Only edition, so games are extra, and you are limited to Nintendo's eShop and physical cartridges rather than an open PC library. Renewed units start at about $474, but the saving over new is small.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally: the PC gamer's handheld

The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally runs Windows with an Xbox interface on top, so it can play games from your PC stores as well as Game Pass. Three months of Game Pass Premium are included, which offsets part of the price. It has a 7in 1080p 120Hz touchscreen, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

The Ryzen Z2 A is the entry chip in AMD's handheld lineup, so expect to lower settings in demanding recent games. Windows on a handheld is also less seamless than a dedicated console OS. The listing showed only two units left and did not identify the seller, so check who is shipping it before you pay.

Steam Deck OLED: great device, poor listing

On paper the Steam Deck OLED is excellent: a 7.4in HDR OLED panel up to 90Hz, 1TB of storage, 16GB of RAM and SteamOS, which owners generally find smoother than Windows for handheld play. Its 4.6-star rating backs that up.

The problem is this specific offer. It is a sponsored, international (UK) version from a third-party seller at $1,069.05, well above what Valve charges for the same model on its own store. UK-market units may also come with a different charger plug. Unless that store is out of stock, buy it there instead.

MSI Claw A8: most power, least proof

The MSI Claw A8 has the most powerful hardware here: a Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 24GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, an 8in 120Hz screen, Thunderbolt 4 and an SD card reader. It is the one to look at if raw Windows gaming performance is your priority.

The listing is the weak point. At $1,237.17 from a third-party seller with one unit left, it costs more than twice the Switch 2, and its 3.6-star rating from only 22 reviews is too thin and too mixed to recommend with confidence.

How to choose

If you want Nintendo's games, plug-and-play simplicity and the best-reviewed device here, get the Switch 2. If your library lives on PC or Game Pass, the ROG Xbox Ally is the sensible entry point. Consider the Steam Deck OLED only at a fair price from Valve, and the Claw A8 only if you need its extra performance and can accept the risk.

The verdict

Buy the Nintendo Switch 2 if you want the best all-round handheld with the strongest owner reviews and a TV dock; it is also the cheapest option here. Pick the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally if you play on PC or Game Pass and want Windows flexibility at a reasonable price. The Steam Deck OLED is a great handheld, but skip this inflated third-party international listing and buy from Valve directly. Skip the MSI Claw A8 unless you specifically need top Windows performance: it is the most expensive and the least proven.

      Questions people ask

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 worth it over a PC handheld?

Yes for most players: it is cheaper, better reviewed and simpler to use, but it only plays Nintendo's library, so PC gamers are better served by the ROG Xbox Ally or Steam Deck.

Switch 2 vs Steam Deck OLED: which should I buy?

Choose the Switch 2 for Nintendo games and TV play, and the Steam Deck OLED if you already own a Steam library; just buy the Deck from Valve rather than this overpriced international listing.

Can the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally play Steam games?

Yes, because it runs Windows, it can install Steam and other PC game stores alongside Xbox and Game Pass.

Is the MSI Claw A8 worth its price?

For most buyers, no: it has the strongest specs here, but at over $1,200 with a 3.6-star rating from only 22 reviews, it is hard to justify against cheaper, better-reviewed options.

Do I need special memory cards for the Switch 2?

Yes, Switch 2 storage expansion uses microSD Express cards, which are a newer format than the standard microSD cards used by the original Switch.

      Should I buy a renewed Switch 2?

Only if you are comfortable with refurbished hardware, since renewed offers start around $474, only about $25 less than a new unit sold by Amazon.
